Discovery

Discovery is a Sound Walk offering all who experience it a spiritual journey through the Cathedral. Using the whole building Discovery invites visitors to use places and artefacts in it to reflect on their unique, personal spiritual journey. Lasting just under forty minutes it is aimed at adults and older teenagers (Keystage 3 and above). This project we believe is the first of its kind for an English Cathedral and has already attracted widespread interest. The image on the left is NOT a mobile phone but the Discovery Project's special handset used to play and control the audio material of the Discovery Soundwalk.

How does it work? The visitor collects the audio aid from one of the trained volunteer welcomers under the Tower at the West Door and then, following the commentary, takes up the invitation offered.

The Dean of Salisbury, June Osborne, said last year in an interview:

"The opportunities for the Church in cathedrals are enormous. People want a sense of awe, to be taken into something bigger than the mundane, and these are inspiring places to be. The combination of the building and the centuries of prayer around it mean people come in and have a profound spiritual encounter. It’s our job to try and root that in the love of God so they have somewhere to develop it."

In a society of widespread spiritual curiosity but increasing ignorance about the Christian faith, ‘Discovery’ will offer many an opportunity for reflection and for some a new encounter with the love of God.

School visits

There is no age limit to visits and all ages and abilities can be catered for. The teacher in charge is encouraged to liaise with Canon Peter Vanozzi to create a trail around the Cathedral. The visit is tailor-made to the children - to their abilities, ages and aims. Teachers can purchase a Cathedral Pack to help plan their visit. A member of the Cathedral team is willing to visit local schools. Workshops relating to particular themes are another aspect of the Cathedral's educational activity. A short act of worship, led by the children themselves, can also be included.
