  An introduction to Christianity

Wakefield Cathedral

“Christians believe that Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus reveals to us that God is our Father, and that God is available to us through the Holy Spirit.”

- Church of England

As a place of Christian worship, belief in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit is at the heart of our faith.

As Christians we believe that God created the world and all that is in it, and that Jesus Christ, God’s son, was born over 2000 years ago to teach us how to love God, to love our neighbours and to save us from our sins. The life, teachings, death and resurrection of Christ highlight God’s unwavering love for humankind.

We take our teachings and wisdom from our holy book – the Bible – which not only inspires us through the faith of those who came before us, but helps us to deepen our own faith and understanding of the world the further we explore.

To show our commitment to God, the following are of central importance for all Christians:

  • Baptism (christening): through baptism we become members of the church and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
  • Reading the Bible: through reading the Bible we learn the story of God’s people and apply its teachings in our daily life
  • Eucharist: through this act of worship we recall the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, through which we are saved, by receiving Holy Communion
  • Prayer: through prayer we give thanks to God and remember the needs of God’s world
  • Witness: through following the example and teachings of Christ in our daily lives we demonstrate God’s love to ourselves and those around us

Is Christianity for me?

Christianity is for everyone.

No matter your age, gender, sexuality or nationality we welcome all people to discover the Christian faith and the love of God.

Wakefield Cathedral

"Being a Christian to me, means trying to be ‘like Christ’ in everything I do and say. Showing compassion, care and understanding to all. This includes my family and friends my work colleagues and all those I come into contact with on a daily basis.

"God’s love for us is everlasting and we have a responsibility to show that love in all that we do in order to draw others to him."

- Bev H
