Singing Teacher

Wakefield Cathedral is looking to appoint a talented, experienced and enthusiastic individual as our choir singing tutor.  This role supports the Director and Assistant Director of Music in providing young people with healthy vocal technique and regular singing lessons to help our singers develop their skills.  You will teach one-on-one or in small groups, supporting our singers in preparing for regular services, including solo work, preparing for Royal School of Church of Music exams, and supporting their broader musical development.

Wakefield Cathedral has a busy music department, with various choirs offering singing opportunities to children aged 6 to 18.  The singing teacher will work primarily with the choristers, boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 14, and the youth choir, aged 14 to 18.  You will be an outstanding vocal tutor with a proven record of working with young people and a comprehensive knowledge of vocal pedagogy and vocal health, as well as basic keyboard skills so that you can accompany singers during lessons.

Part-time, freelance
Probation period: Six months
Pay: Hourly rate to be agreed with the successful candidate

  • Schedule

    The singing teacher will be expected to attend on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 16:30 and 18:00, although we understand that this role is likely to form part of a portfolio career, so occasional absences for professional engagements would usually be permitted by prior agreement with the Director of Music.

  • Safeguarding

    Wakefield Cathedral takes its responsibility for the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults very seriously and their welfare is paramount in all areas of cathedral life.  Details of our safeguarding policies and practices can be found here.  Because this role involves regulated activity with children and young people, appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Confidential Declaration and Enhanced Disclosure with Barring checks from the Disclosure and Barring Service.  Appointment will be subject to three satisfactory references and satisfactory proof of the candidate’s right to work in the United Kingdom.

Choir Chaperone

Wakefield Cathedral is looking to appoint a confident and enthusiastic individual as our choir chaperone. This role supports the Director and Assistant Director of Music in ensuring the cathedral’s duty of care towards the children and young people in the cathedral choirs. You will be a pastoral point of contact for those children while they are at the cathedral and support their development and progress in the choir. Key duties will include attending regular rehearsals and services involving children or young people, providing first aid or pastoral care as needed, contacting parents and carers as needed, and supporting the cathedral music department in maintaining the highest standards of safeguarding and pastoral care at all times.

Wakefield Cathedral has a busy music department, with various choirs offering singing opportunities to children aged 6 to 18. The choir chaperone will work with all these age groups, including Byrd Song (ages 6 to 8), the choristers (ages 8 to 14), and the youth choir (ages 14 to 18). You will be an excellent communicator and a team player, with a keen awareness of context and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

Part-time, permanent
Probation period: Six months
Pay: Hourly rate of the National Living Wage (currently £12.21)

  • Schedule

    The working hours will average around 14 hours per week, although there will be a degree of variation throughout the year.  The role will involve work during evenings, weekends and bank holidays.  The chaperone will normally only be required during choir term, which mostly follows school terms, with the exception of services and rehearsals up to and including Christmas and Easter Day.  The regular hours will be as follows:

    • Monday 16:00-18.00
    • Tuesday 15:30-18.15
    • Wednesday 15:30-18.15
    • Thursday 15:30-19.30 (Week A); 15.30-18.15 (Week B)
    • Friday 15:30-18.15 (once or twice a term only)
    • Sunday 08:30-12.30 and 14.30-16.30 (Week B only)

Volunteer Role: Front of House Team Member

Location: Wakefield Cathedral, Northgate, Wakefield, WF1 1HG
Hours: Flexible – to be discussed with the Volunteer Coordinator
Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week (flexible to suit your availability)

Role Summary

Wakefield Cathedral is looking for friendly and enthusiastic individuals to join our Front of House Volunteer Team. As a Front of House Volunteer, you will play a vital role in creating a welcoming environment for all who visit the cathedral, whether they are attending services, exploring the history and architecture, or seeking a moment of quiet reflection.

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, and be part of the vibrant life of the cathedral.

  • Key Responsibilities
    • Provide a warm and friendly welcome to all visitors, answering questions and helping them feel at ease.
    • Offer information about the cathedral’s history, events, and services.
    • Assist visitors in navigating the cathedral and understanding its key features.
    • Support the sale of guidebooks, souvenirs, and other merchandise at the welcome desk.
    • Help to monitor the safety and security of the building and visitors.
    • Ensure the welcome desk and surrounding area are tidy and well-presented at all times.
    • Provide support during special services and events as needed.
  • What We’re Looking For

    We welcome volunteers from all walks of life. You don’t need previous experience, but we’re looking for individuals who:

    • Enjoy meeting and talking to people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Are approachable, enthusiastic, and reliable.
    • Have an interest in the history, architecture, and mission of Wakefield Cathedral (training will be provided).
    • Are comfortable working as part of a team.
