Accessibility

Access and facilities for people with disabilities

Wakefield Cathedral welcomes all visitors and we are aware that some people may need extra help and advice to make the best of their time here. We do ask anyone who wants or needs that extra help to contact us in advance. We will do all that we can to ensure that visitors have an interesting and enjoyable visit.

Facilities

Parts of Wakefield Cathedral were built in medieval times and were not designed for people with disabilities. Neverthless, we remain committed to making as much of the cathedral as possible accessible for all users. We have disabled toilet facilities and a hearing loop as well as level access areas and good lighting in most parts. Please see below for details of other facilities which may make your visit more enjoyable.

Parking

On-street parking is available on Wood Street, Northgate and some of the surrounding roads. The nearest car parks are in the Ridings and Trinity Walk shopping centres.

Blue Badge holders can park in the bay at the top of Westmorland Street (outside The Raven pub) or in one of the several on-street parking spaces on Wood Street. Borough Road car park also has around a dozen spaces. The Ridings Shopping Centre has many disabled spaces and is also the home of Wakefield Shop Mobility (see below for more information). All are within minutes of the cathedral.

Assistance Dogs

Assistance dogs are very welcome in the cathedral.

The Cathedral and precincts

Parts of Wakefield Cathedral date back to the 12th Century and were not designed with modern access needs in mind. The cathedral is seeking to improve access and many parts of the cathedral are now fully accessible to all. Most flights of steps have at least one handrail but some of the older floors are uneven and care is required.

Wheelchair users

Wakefield Shopmobility is a scheme which loans manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and powered scooters to members of the public with limited mobility to shop and to visit leisure and commercial facilities within the city centre. These have to be pre-booked and this can be arranged by contacting:

The Shopmobility Office Tel : 01924 787788 Email : shopmobility@wakefield.gov.uk

We recommend those with less mobility to access the cathedral via the South Entrance. The route to the lavatories (including an accessible one) is also level. The Education Room in Cathedral Centre has ramped access from Westmorland Street and also an accessible toilet.

The visually impaired

The light levels in some parts of the cathedral can appear low, especially on dull days. Visitors with impaired vision are encouraged to touch the many different shapes and surfaces around the cathedral and precinct. Care is needed on the uneven floors (including some ledger stones) and steps.

Treacy Hall

Weekly pop-up cafés operate out of the Treacy Hall and welcome all:
Tuesdays 12:00-13:00 – Tuesday Snap Lunch, serving soup and pre-booked sandwiches.
Fridays 10:00-12:00 – Meet Up Café & Secondhand Bookshop by Mothers’ Union, hot drinks served by donation.

There is level access and an accessible toilet. Assistance dogs are welcome.
