VAT Ditty Dean’s wife to launch Tea For You in Wakefield Cathedral

The wife of the Dean of Wakefield whose protest VAT Ditty became a YouTube sensation will take to the keyboard again – this time to launch Afternoon Tea in the Cathedral Kitchen this Saturday as part of the Tea For You season in Wakefield Cathedral.

Trained musician and accomplished singer/songwriter, Pamela Greener will play for the first Afternoon Tea which runs from 2.30pm til 4.00pm this Saturday. Afternoon Tea is available every Saturday through July – part of the Cathedral’s Tea For You season of invitation, hospitality and welcome this summer.

Pamela was named one of the Daily Telegraph’s top Britons in 2012 after her music hall style VAT ditty went viral, warning that the Chancellor’s proposals to close VAT relief on historic buildings would put an extra £200,000 on the restoration bill at Wakefield Cathedral - and plunge many other church buildings into financial crisis.

Her campaign helped raise the issue for both Wakefield Cathedral and the Church of England, which had 12,500 listed buildings. An online petition got over 13k signatures and saw a U-turn from the Government.

Now Pamela, a former international tax accountant is using her unique ditty-writing skills to help other historic buildings raise funds - but this Saturday she is taking time out of her busy schedule to play at Afternoon Tea in the Cathedral Kitchen.

The Cathedral’s Tea for You season was launched earlier this month with free tea/coffee and porridge served early one morning and free tea/coffee vouchers handed out. Tea for You goes to the heart of the Cathedral’s Christian principles: to be a place of welcome, hospitality and invitation in the heart of the city.

The Dean, the Very Revd Jonathan Greener said: “We are having a summer of Tea For You. We will be inviting everyone to celebrate welcome and hospitality at Wakefield Cathedral.”

The next event will see Pamela Greener back in the Cathedral with singer, Sue Murray for a Tea Dance on August 5 from 2.30pm, supported by local dancers.

Tickets are £4 in advance and £5 on the door. They include free tea/coffee and a scone. Afternoon teas, cake and Prosecco will also be available to buy. Tickets are available in the Cathedral/Gift Shop.

FREE VOUCHERS FOR TEA AND COFFEE ARE AVAILABE FROM WELCOMERS INSIDE THE CATHEDRAL AND VALID FOR USE IN THE KITCHEN ALL SUMMER.

AFTERNOON TEA IS SERVED from 2.30-4.00pm, EVERY SATURDAY THROUGHOUT JULY.

TEA DANCE – AUGUST 5. 2.30 – 4.00pm, cost £4 early bird or £5 on the door, to include tea/coffee and scone.
