Marta flies for our funds!

7 June 2018

Daredevil septuagenarian to wing walk for Wakefield Cathedral

She’s been called a intrepid septuagenarian, but all Marta Smith wants is a more daring challenge to raise funds for Wakefield Cathedral.

Marta, 73, raised well over £2,000 by abseiling the 32 metres down the Cathedral tower back in September 2015.

And next month she is back to take on a more challenging feat when she wing-walks across a small bi-plane to raise funds for the cathedral’s latest project, to reinvigorate the Treacy Hall facilities and create a new Song School.

Marta, originally from Italy, moved to Wakefield in 1986 with her husband’s job, and became more involved in the life of the Cathedral in the early 1990s.

She said: “I have never been afraid of heights. I am an optimist and a trusting person; I know they will not drop me.

“And I have always been a bit of a daredevil. I was a very daring toddler; as far as I remember, my mother was always sewing what clothing I had ripped that day climbing trees or something.

“And I want more toilets in the Cathedral,' she said.

“Especially more toilets,” she added.

Marta will take on the challenge on July 7 at Breighton near Selby – weather permitting.
