Light Up for Leavers

10 July 2018

Wakefield Cathedral will welcome over seventy primary school leavers this Thursday for its first Annual Year 6 Leavers service.

Pupils from three church schools; Horbury Bridge CE J and I Academy and St Johns CE VA J and I, from Wakefield, and Great Preston CoE Primary, Leeds, have created 3D models of candles for the service to tie in with the theme of light to encourage them to think about their time at primary school and how they feel about going to High School.

Gillian Bunn, Wakefield Cathedral’s Community Outreach Officer, said: “We are as pleased as punch to welcome these students and celebrate all they have achieved at their primary schools and help them look forward to going up to High School.

“We want to send them out with love and joy in their hearts for the next step of their educational life,” she added.

The decorated candles will stay in the Cathedral as a memory of their time at their primary schools.

This is the last one of the leaver services for church schools in the Diocese of Leeds with services already held at Ripon and Bradford Cathedrals, Leeds Minster and Halifax Minster. It is the first time Wakefield has done this and it will now become an annual event. Called Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: the service starts at 1pm on Thursday.
