Come on in – we are open!!
HURRAH!! The scaffolding has finally gone down from Wakefield Cathedral just in time for the start of the new choir year, the return of our free lunchtime concerts, our guided tours, the Heritage Open Weekends – and our latest feature, Cathedral Wednesdays.
Our boy and girl chorister are all back from their summer break and have been rehearsing hard all week for our first full choral Sunday – and the return of a full round of choral services.
Our free Tuesday lunchtime concerts started up again this week too – with our own Director of Music, Tom Moore taking first spot on the organ. A full programme is back in place every Tuesday from 1pm for shoppers, members of the congregation, visitors or passers by to drop in – bring their sandwiches – and take a break out of their busy lives.
Our guided tours with Richard York are back in full swing – they run every Wednesday – at 11am and again at 2.45pm.
And from this Wednesday (12 September), we are launching Cathedral Wednesdays – a series of short studies – only taking place on the three Wednesdays in September – entitled: For All The Saints - Moving forward by exploring our heritage.
They start immediately aftr Choral Evensong (feel free to join us) with an hour of discussion and ending with Compline at 8.45pm.
This week Wakefield was named in the top ten inspirational places to visit by the National Churches Trust set up to promote churches and cathedrals – for its special family friendly event themed around Extraordinary Women that will run on Saturday 15 Septemberas part of the Heritage Open Days.
The special event – designed for families - offers a new trail that will take visitors on a journey to discover some of the extraordinary women in its famous stained glass windows –with themed art and crafts sessions to take home. It is free and drop in is from 11am - 3pm. Visitors to Wakefield Cathedral on this day also have the chance to climb the 170 steps up the tower and see Wakefield from a new perspective.
This year the Heritage Open Days this year are spread over the two weekends of 6-9 Sept and 13-16 – so drop in this weekend to discover something new.
Listen to our very own Canon Precentor, Leah Vasey Saunders talking about the fab news we’ve been named in the top ten here on Radio Leeds’ Sunday Show with Andrew Edwards (from 1hr 10mins in).
