Time Begins to Move Forward Again at Wakefield Cathedral

18 February 2021

Over the past twelve months it feels as if time has stood still for many of us, however at Wakefield Cathedral the feeling is meant in a much more literal way.

That is because the historic clock, which can be seen on the cathedral spire across the skylines of the Wakefield District, broke during the summer of 2020 and has remained static ever since… until now.

The time has now come for the situation to be rectified, with clockwork specialists ‘Smith of Derby’ visiting the city centre cathedral this week to install a digitized mechanism to resolve the problem, with the original mechanism being retained in situ for conservation purposes.

The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling, said: “The broken clock at Wakefield Cathedral has rather symbolised the situation across the city, district and nation throughout the past twelve months, with time very much feeling as though it has ‘stood still’ due to the impact of the pandemic.

“Fortunately, we are now hearing more and more positive stories associated with the roll out of the vaccine, the plans being put in place for the year ahead, and the continued formulation of the ‘new normal’.

“The repairs to the clock come at a most appropriate time then: we hope that many will find solace that the hands of our clock are moving once again. A working clock reminds us we can always find a way to move forward, even out of the most challenging circumstances.”

The repairs to the clock cost around £2,000, with money being raised from the congregation alongside a £500 grant given from Wakefield BID.

Christine Armstrong, BID Director, added: “Wakefield BID were delighted to support Wakefield Cathedral with a £500 grant towards the cost of fixing the cathedral clock.

“The cathedral offers a wonderful landmark to the city of Wakefield, in a ‘normal year’ attracting visitors from all walks of life be it for worship, events or simply companionship and we are incredibly fortunate as a city to have such a marvellous building situated in the very heart of our community.”

Wakefield Cathedral is currently only open for Private Daily Worship between 11:00 to 14:00, with Sunday Services streamed live via our social media channels.
