New ‘Byrd Song’ Choir Group takes flight

21 September 2021

We are delighted to have launched a new choir group, aimed at giving children aged six to eight a taste of choir-life.

The group, aptly named ‘Byrd Song’ (a play on the name of English composer William Byrd), will offer children in school Years Two to Four the opportunity to experience some of the joys of being in a cathedral choir, including receiving musical tuition, meeting new friends and having the chance to take their love for singing to the next level.

‘Byrd Song’ will take place every Saturday morning from 09:30-10:30 from Wakefield Cathedral (situated in the heart of the city centre).

Commonly, Choir Boys and Choir Girls are recruited from the age of eight so ‘Byrd Song’ offers the perfect introduction for any child showing a keen interest in music at a young age.

Dr Ed Jones, Director of Music here at Wakefield Cathedral, said: “We are delighted to be launching ‘Byrd Song’ at Wakefield Cathedral and we are really looking forward to meeting children and their families who are looking to pursue their interests in the exciting world of cathedral music.

“All are welcome to come along and see if ‘Byrd Song’ is right for you, the benefits to being a part of a cathedral choir are endless, educationally, socially and even through improving health and wellbeing in both body and mind.

“By coming along to ‘Byrd Song’ for just one hour a week you could be opening the door to some incredible experiences for your child, singing in magnificent buildings such as our cathedral here in Wakefield, and to top it all off… it’s completely free!”

Children wishing to attend ‘Byrd Song’ need no prior experience, just a love for music and a willing attitude to learn, join in and be a part of something special.
