It was announced in the weekend that Canon Peter will be stepping down from his role as Canon Missioner of Wakefield Cathedral at the end of March as he moves on to become the new Archdeacon of Hackney.
Peter joined Wakefield Cathedral in March of 2021 and, although his time with us has been short, we are eternally grateful for the work and support he has provided during a challenging period as we continue to navigate our way through these unprecedented times.
We are sure you will join us in wishing Peter the very best in his new role. Our attention will now turn to recruiting our next Canon Missioner who will be tasked with continuing the fine work Peter has done over the past ten months.
On his appointment, Peter has shared the following message: “Thank you to friends and colleagues at Wakefield Cathedral and Diocese of Leeds for your warm welcome and partnership over this past year. Particular thanks to Dean Simon who has modelled a gracious and generous approach to leadership which has been really appreciated and will guide me as I face this next challenge. Wakefield Cathedral team and congregations have been a blessing to me and I will cherish the opportunity to have worshipped and served alongside you all, thank you.
“Hackney Archdeaconry is one of the most diverse areas of London with a young and growing population of over 800,000. It includes the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney and Islington with all their associated urban mission opportunities and social challenges. Hackney Archdeaconry is a very similar context and neighbour to my roots in Deptford which make it the right context for me to take on the challenge of archidiaconal ministry.
“As I prepare to leave Wakefield I hold dearly all those who have trusted me, opened their hearts and homes. As St Paul wrote “I always thank God for every one of you”. (1 Corinthians 1)
Canon Peter will be moving to London at the end of March. Details of the arrangements for his final Sunday at the cathedral will follow in due course.
On the above news Dean Simon added: “I know that you will join me in thanking Peter for his ministry in Wakefield, in congratulating him on his new role, and in assuring him and Andrea of our love and prayers as they prepare for their move.”
