Asher, the gravedigger: crucified. Manya, his wife: her throat slashed. Their eight sons and daughters: beaten to death. Where to begin? What to do first? Whom to help?

Standing at the kitchen sink this morning, I looked out towards Woolley Edge as patches of red colour began to tinge the morning sky. Each day is transformed by the rising sun, which brings light and warmth after the darkness and cold of night, just as the year is transformed by the coming of spring.

Friday is the feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, when we remember the coming of the magi to see the infant Christ. Our celebration of this feast is very ancient, in fact more ancient than the celebration of the nativity itself, and a large number of traditions have grown up around it.

It is St Francis of Assisi in the early thirteenth century who is credited with creating the first nativity scene – or presepe in Italian – complete with live animals and people. He used it as a teaching aid in his sermons to emphasise the very humble circumstances of Jesus’s birth.

A member of the congregation sidled up to me after our beautiful Advent Carol Service this Sunday afternoon (thank you to Mr Boswtead and the choir, by the way) and whispered, ‘I probably shouldn’t say this, but I do prefer Advent services to Christmas ones.’
