Light a Candle

Candles in the cathedral

Candles have always held a significant and prominent place in Christian worship, representing the light that God brought into the world through Christ.

When visiting Wakefield Cathedral many visitors choose to light a candle, be it in memory of a loved one or as a sign of prayer to God, giving thanks or sharing worries.

Lighting a candle can offer a person something to focus on when taking time to reflect or saying a prayer.

We have a number of candle stations located around the cathedral. There is no charge to light a candle but donations are greatly appreciated. All monies raised support the upkeep of Wakefield Cathedral for future generations

Did you know...

On an average year Wakefield Cathedral goes through over 32,000 candles! The largest candle in the cathedral, the Paschal Candle, is blessed and lit at Easter and then used throughout Easter and on special occasions within the year.

Virtual candles

If you are unable to visit Wakefield Cathedral there is also the opportunity to light a virtual candle, appearing on our website as seen below.

You may wish to light a virtual candle in memory of a loved one or to signify a marked occasion in your life. When filling out the form you will have the opportunity to:

  • Write a personalised message
  • Upload an image to accompany the message*

Again there is no charge to light a virtual candle, however donations are greatly appreciated.

Simply click ‘Light a Candle’, fill out the form and your candle and message will appear on our virtual candle wall below.

If you have any questions please do contact us by emailing admin@wakefield-cathedral.org.uk

*if an image is uploaded it will replace the image of the candle, if no image is chosen a pre-selected image of a candle will be shown
