Following announcements at our morning services on Sunday, we are delighted to share the news that John Eager has been appointed as Wakefield Cathedral’s new Chief Operating Officer, joining us in September 2026.
Following a highly competitive recruitment process, John impressed the appointments panel and staff alike, and we are all looking forward to welcoming him to the Cathedral team later this year.
John brings extensive experience of leading operations in complex and inspiring organisations, including the British Antarctic Survey, the Peak District National Park and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. His wealth of expertise, combined with his passion for people, mission and organisational excellence, will be a tremendous asset to the Cathedral.
John said:
“I am delighted to be joining the Wakefield Cathedral team as Chief Operating Officer in September. I look forward to joining the Cathedral community and its values: Joyful, Generous and Inclusive.
I have been lucky enough to work in some of the most inspiring places and with some of the most dedicated and passionate people in the world: Antarctica, with the British Antarctic Survey, The Peak District National Park and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. I am humbled to now be able to soon add Wakefield Cathedral, its staff and the amazing community.
I will bring my operational skills, knowledge and passion to the role, to support the Vision and the Mission of the Cathedral.
Lastly, I would like to pass on my thanks to all involved in the recruitment and selection process for such a professional and enjoyable process.
I look forward to meeting you all in person soon.”
The Very Revd Dr Philip Hobday, Dean of Wakefield, said:
“In a very strong field, John stood out as having real understanding of the possibilities and constraints of working in a wonderful place like Wakefield Cathedral, and brings substantial experience of leading operations in demanding and complex organisations. We’re really looking forward to working with John when he joins our team this autumn.”
Please join us in congratulating John on his appointment and in giving him a very warm Wakefield Cathedral welcome ahead of his arrival this autumn.
