  • Fidgety Things

To support the work of the Dementia Wards at Pinderfields Hospital the branch have also been making ‘twiddle muffs’ and ‘tool aprons’, items which can be given to dementia patients to keep their hands active and busy, providing a wonderful source of visual, tactile and sensory stimulation.

  • Supporting local women

The branch are proud to support the work of the Barnsley Women’s Refuge and the Teenage Parent Project, often holding collections and raising funds to provide these vital services with items such as good, toiletries and clothes.

Tackling domestic violence against women, November-December 2021

In the winter of 2021 and to mark the Mothers’ Union Global Day of Action, the Wakefield Cathedral branch alongside MU’s around the world joined together to raise awareness around the shocking statistics surrounding ‘violence against women’ and the part we can all play in tackling this issue.

A special Prayer Vigil was held at sixteen cathedrals across the UK, including in Wakefield (hosted by the Bishop of Wakefield), followed by an observance of three-minutes of silence on the cathedral steps.

Alongside the service, a display entitled “Souls of our Shoes” was developed, showcasing eighteen pairs of ladies’ shoes and the stories which go with each, giving visitors the chance to ‘walk in their footsteps’.
