You’ll be abseiling down the iconic 164-foot cathedral tower with a fully trained and experienced team guiding you every step of the way. No prior experience is necessary – just courage and enthusiasm!

FAQs

  • What are the cost options?

    Super Earlybird tickets are £65, Earlybird tickets are £75, Standard tickets are £99. If you choose Wakefield Cathedral as your charity to support, your ticket is free with a £25 deposit, refundable upon receipt of a minimum of £100 sponsorship funds.

  • What time is the abseil?

    Time slots will be allocated to all attendees. The earliest time slot will begin at 10:00 (gathering at 09:45) and the latest will finish at 16:30.

  • Can I sign up on the day?

    Experience-only tickets can be purchased on the day, subject to availability. We recommend booking in advance to ensure there is a space for you.

  • Is there a weight limit?

    The equipment used on the day can hold up to 3 tonnes, so no, there is no weight limit, but you will need to fit into a harness.

  • I am under 18, can I take part?

    Anyone aged 13 or over can take part, as long as you have a parent or guardian with you on the day to be present during the abseil and to sign consent forms.

  • Is there a maximum age?

    There is no maximum age limit, however you are required to be in a good state of health and able to climb the tower stairs in order to reach the platform.

  • What should I wear or bring?

    – Waterproof jacket
    – Trainers, not slip on shoes
    – Warm and comfortable clothing (not denim)
    – Hat / gloves / sunhat
    – Bobbles for long hair
    – Sun screen / sunglasses if required

  • How safe is abseiling?

    This event is being run by Carnegie Great Outdoors instructors who are fully qualified and highly experienced, ensuring that abseiling is very safe. They use industry approved ropes which can hold around 3 tonnes. The event is fully insured, risk assessed and all the instructors are first aiders.

  • What will I be abseiling down?

    You will be abseiling from the tower platform of Wakefield Cathedral to the ground. Access to the tower platform will be via 170 internal narrow medieval stone spiral stairs.

  • How far will I be abseiling?

    164 ft high, or 50 metres.

  • How do I raise sponsorship money?

    JustGiving.com is a great way to digitally collect sponsorship funds. Try looking up your charity of choice on the JustGiving website. If they’re there, sign up and select your charity. You’ll get your own page to share your story and why you’re raising money for your chosen charity, as well as a handy link you can share for people to donate to. Once the abseil is over, your raised funds will automatically be transferred to your charity.

    Alternatively, reach out to the charity directly; they will be able to tell you what to do.
