In November, we were thrilled to host the artist Johnsey and artists from ArtWorks South Yorkshire, (collectively known as JAAWS Draws) for a two-week residency in Treacy Hall. They were joined by community groups and schools, as well as the public to create a collaborative piece of work using Johnsey’s practice of Mark Making Responsive Drawing. Participants were first invited to close their eyes and draw in response to music, this was developed further by using a viewfinder to find a motif which could be repeated and developed across the drawing, participants were finally invited to fill in detail and work into the drawing.
The final piece, which was installed in the Treacy Hall last week, reflects the joyful sense of community which was present in the Treacy Hall for the two weeks of the residency. It brings a warmth and brightness to the space representing not only those who took part in the project, but the diversity of our local community and we hope, all that is to come in that space. We are sincerely thankful to Johnsey for coming and facilitating the work and to Wakefield Council who funded the project with a Culture Grant.
The Treacy Hall is available to hire for one-off events or regular activities, please contact the office for more information on rates and availability. At the same time, we are thinking carefully and prayerfully about how the space can be used in to serve the people of Wakefield and we hope to have much more to share in the near future.
