“Music that reaches into the soul and lifts it skyward” BBC Music Magazine
“It’s not often a new Requiem demands your attention, but this one certainly does” Andrew Marr, Classic FM
One of the UK’s favourite new choral works will be performed in Wakefield Cathedral in February, in a deeply moving performance conducted by its composer, Matthew Coleridge. Attendees can choose whether to simply attend the concert, or perform as part of it through a free one-day choral workshop.
REQUIEM was one of the highest new entries in the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2023, with presenter Alexander Armstrong also choosing it as his Album of the Week, and dubbing the composer “a great force for good in the choral world”.
150 choral singers from around Yorkshire will take place in the performance, which will also feature Australian-Korean cellist Waynne Kwon, and local vocal soloists Charlie Trueman and Louise Alp. They’ll be accompanied at the organ by the cathedral’s Director of Music James Bowstead.
Requiem has been performed by choirs around the world, and has been described as “a work of exquisite beauty” (Music in Portsmouth) and “music that reaches into the soul and lifts it skyward” (BBC Music Magazine). It weaves beautiful, lyrical melodies into dazzling tapestries of sound, with a solo cello providing hope and comfort as it soars above the shimmering choral textures.

Described by Classic FM’s Alexander Armstrong as “a great force for good in the choral world”, Matthew Coleridge is an exciting new voice in UK choral music. His Requiem in a Day choral workshops are regular sell-outs, with singers coming from around the country to perform his music in some of our finest cathedrals and abbeys, including Exeter Cathedral, Portsmouth Cathedral, Christchurch Priory and Selby Abbey. Matthew’s music is regularly broadcast on Classic FM and BBC Radio 3. His album, Requiem, was recorded by the Choir of Royal Holloway, and was chosen as Classic FM’s album of the week on its release in March 2023.
