In recent weeks there have been reports in the news about an increase in the numbers of women and children suffering domestic abuse. For some time now Mothers’ Union have been seeking to work with other organisations to address this problem.
RISE UP Against Domestic Abuse is Mothers’ Union’s campaign to raise awareness about domestic abuse.
The letters of RISE UP stand for
Respond to a disclosure of abuse with compassion and calm
Inform the person where they can get help. If a person is in immediate danger call 999,
otherwise direct them to their county domestic abuse helpline or the Refuge 24 hour
helpline on 0808 2000 247
Support in a safe manner, listen and believe
Empower them to grow and heal
Unite the members of Mother’s Union and churches to help end domestic abuse
Pray for all affected by domestic abuse.
We are working with our members to ensure that as many churches as possible have information about their local domestic abuse helpline. We have produced a RISE UP poster raising awareness about domestic abuse which can be displayed in appropriate public place such as in churches, toilets, community centres, village halls etc. Posters can be downloaded from mothersunion.org/RISEUP
Churches can receive bronze , silver or gold awards by engaging at different levels with the campaign. See the information on the website or ask an MU member how to do this). One of the aims of Mothers’ union is to help families that have met with adversity and so this an issue that is close to our hearts. We hope and pray that as many clergy and church congregations as possible will join with and support us in this.
