Generosity Week

26 September 2025

Thank you to all those who make our work possible.

The late Queen, I read somewhere, banned a well-known board game from royal gatherings because it led to disputes about (paper) money. Talking about money, real or pretend, is not generally something we like, and especially not in church!

But it’s National Generosity Week and so the first thing to say is thank you.  So many readers of Catchup support the work of the Cathedral in so many ways – by your faithful attendance or your constant prayers, by volunteering for a task or activity, by your kindness towards your clergy, and more besides.

Having said that, this week is a particular chance to say thank you to those whose financial giving is essential to our life together.  This amazing place is open for everyone, for free, for three hundred and sixty five days a year.  It is a place where people come every day to find a moment of peace or someone to talk to; to celebrate a joy or to acknowledge a struggle; for music, art, worship, discussion, learning, and more.

To do this, our Cathedral takes around £2,604 a day to run.  The Church of England nationally gives us about £1,159 a day.  The rest has to come from the events we run; grant applications; and of course the generosity of so many individuals.  Thank you so much for helping us bridge that gap and go on keeping Wakefield Cathedral open and welcoming, a place of celebration and solace for our whole community.

By far the easiest and most efficient way to give is through the Parish Giving Scheme, and there is information about this on our website.  This way all the administration is done centrally, at no cost to us, and you can choose whether to GiftAid your donations and whether to increase your gifts annually by inflation.

But: however and whatever you give, it all makes a vital difference; is all gratefully received; and all is a sign of the generosity of our God, who in Jesus Christ gave himself for us all.

with thanks and best wishes,
Philip
