Wakefield Cathedral Hosts Landmark Celebration of 150 Years of the Mothers’ Union

03 November 2026

Members of the Mothers’ Union from across Yorkshire gathered at Wakefield Cathedral for a landmark service celebrating 150 years of the worldwide Christian movement, alongside the commissioning of the Diocesan President for the Diocese of Leeds.

The special service brought together generations of members, clergy and supporters to honour the remarkable legacy of the Mothers’ Union since its founding in 1876, celebrating its enduring commitment to prayer, supporting families and serving communities both locally and across the world.

Presided over by the Rt Revd Smitha Prasadam, Bishop of Huddersfield and Diocesan Chaplain to the Mothers’ Union, with the Rt Revd Malcolm Chamberlain, Bishop of Wakefield, preaching, the celebration marked both a significant anniversary and an important new chapter in the life of the movement within the Diocese of Leeds.

Celebrating Generations of Faithful Service

The Cathedral was filled with a spirit of celebration and thanksgiving as members, clergy and supporters gathered to recognise 150 years of extraordinary dedication to prayer, faith and service.

The occasion provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the contribution of generations of Mothers’ Union members across the Diocese of Leeds and its predecessor dioceses, recognising the lasting difference their commitment has made to the life of the Church, families and communities.

A particularly significant moment was the commissioning of the Diocesan President, affirming the continuing mission and leadership of the Mothers’ Union within the Diocese of Leeds as it looks towards the future.

Honouring 150 Years of Faith in Action

Founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, the Mothers’ Union has grown from its beginnings in England into a worldwide Christian movement, united by a commitment to supporting families, strengthening communities and putting faith into action through prayer and practical service.

Throughout the celebration, those gathered gave thanks for the remarkable vision of Mary Sumner and the generations of members who have carried that vision forward.

The service recognised not only the rich history of the movement but also its continuing relevance today, as members across the Diocese of Leeds and around the world remain committed to prayer, fellowship, advocacy and loving service.

A Joyful Celebration and a Hopeful Future

It was a particular privilege for Wakefield Cathedral to host this important milestone in the life of the Mothers’ Union, bringing together members from across the Diocese to celebrate their shared history, renew friendships and look ahead with hope.

The occasion was a powerful reminder that the Mothers’ Union is not simply an organisation with a remarkable past, but a living and active expression of Christian faith, continuing to make a difference in communities both locally and internationally.

As the Mothers’ Union celebrates its 150th anniversary, Wakefield Cathedral joins in giving thanks for all those who have contributed to its life and witness, and for the dedication of those who continue to serve today.

We offer our warmest congratulations to the Mothers’ Union on 150 years of faithful service, with our prayers and very best wishes for the years ahead.
