Our wonderful volunteers are at the heart of what we do at Wakefield Cathedral, supporting the cathedral across all areas of mission, work and worship, bringing with them their wealth of experience, personalities and skills – we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.
We’ve mentioned the enormous benefits which volunteers bring to Wakefield Cathedral, but likewise volunteering offers individuals some fantastic opportunities and benefits too! These include:
As a cathedral volunteer you will likely be working alongside a number of different people, from staff and congregation members to fellow volunteers, making new friends along the way!
Wakefield Cathedral is proud to support the local community and the Diocese of Leeds.
Whether you have customer service skills, computer skills or interpersonal skills, we can find the right role to match your talents.
As well as maximising the use of your current skill set, volunteering can help you to upskill, perfect for those looking to learn new things or seeking a new career path.
Many of our volunteers enjoy volunteering in, around and for the cathedral as it brings them closer to God, helping with the mission of the cathedral.
We want all of our volunteers to enjoy their role, have fun and make memories.
“Volunteering at the Cathedral is fantastic! It’s so enjoyable. It’s a wonderful personal experience as well as giving to others – you give and receive at the same time. I wish I could do it more often.”
- Janice Tattersall, volunteer at Wakefield Cathedral.
We have plenty of possibilities just waiting for you to explore, whether you are looking for an events-based role, wanting to welcome people to the cathedral or keen to support the services on a Sunday, we can find the right opportunity for you.
We can work around your availability and flexibility, meaning if you are just looking for weekend work, only able to work Tuesdays or perhaps you are wanting to offer support from home we will be happy to work together to find the right volunteering job for your circumstances.
Finance Committee Members
Wakefield Cathedral is seeking one or more new members to join its Finance Committee.
The Finance Committee plays a crucial role in the governance of the cathedral, keeping its financial activities under review on behalf of the Cathedral Chapter (Board of Trustees) and reporting regularly to Chapter. It is responsible for monitoring financial policies and strategies, reviewing the draft budget, regularly monitoring financial information and providing advice to Chapter to enable it to make financial decisions.
Members of the committee, who may be lay or ordained, must have relevant and recent financial skills and experience, including knowledge of accounting, risk management, audit or financial governance.
If you would like to find out more about volunteering at Wakefield Cathedral or to discuss volunteering options, please email admin@wakefield-cathedral.org.uk or call 01924 373923.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
You need to be 18 to volunteer with Wakefield Cathedral unless you are joining us on work experience, in which case we will need to speak with your school and parent/guardian.
If you are a UK citizen you are entitled to volunteer at Wakefield Cathedral (if you are not a UK citizen, please contact the UK Borders and Immigration Agency to find out if your visa allows you to volunteer).
It all depends on which role you wish to take on. Our greeters need to have great interpersonal skills, our events team must have solid customer service skills and our office volunteers need to be well organised.
We are always willing to help upskill our volunteers but the number one criteria you must tick to volunteer with us is being willing to give it your all.
If you have a criminal record but would be interested in volunteering with Wakefield Cathedral, please email admin@wakefield-cathedral.org.uk as each application will need to be managed on a person-by-person basis.
Again it depends on the role you are undertaking. Some roles we need you to be here for a certain time every week, whilst other roles may be more casual depending on the task at hand.
Any role which offers to cover expenses will be detailed in the volunteer role description.
Want to join us? Great! Simply email admin@wakefield-cathedral.org.uk or call 01924 373923 to get started.
For the majority of our volunteer opportunities you will need to be aged 18 or above, and for many roles we may also require a DBS check.
