On Saturday 22 February, as part of Wakefield Council’s annual Rhubarb Festival, a free community afternoon tea took place in the nave of Wakefield Cathedral. This was kindly supported by Wakefield Council and AGE UK Wakefield District.
Mothers’ Union (MU) members from across the Wakefield Episcopal Area were proud to attend the event and link up with representatives from AGE UK. Members spoke about how we could strengthen relationships, work together and where possible, pool resources.
On Fridays the MU operates a Meet Up Café in Treacy Hall, attached to Wakefield Cathedral and run by MU members within Wakefield City. The café offers a warm drop in space providing simple tea/coffee and a chance to chat. There is no charge for the offerings in the café, but donations are gratefully welcomed.
We are delighted that AGE UK Wakefield District have offered to help publicise our Friday Café in their outreach literature and we thank them for this.
The MU café also has a number of books wanting good homes and these can again be purchased for a donation. If you have any books that you want to give to a new home, please do consider donating them to us too!
In 2024, The MU café raised nearly a £1,000 which helped to fund the MU Diocesan AFIA ‘Away From It All Holiday’ project. The AFIA project provided a seaside holiday in Filey for families in need.
