Film Screening Inspires Eco Conversation at Wakefield Cathedral

10 April 2025

Yesterday evening, Wakefield Cathedral opened its doors for a special screening of Six Inches of Soil, a powerful documentary that champions sustainable farming and the growing movement of regenerative agriculture in the UK. The film follows the inspiring journeys of three young farmers as they embark on a journey of regenerative practices, offering a heartfelt and hopeful look at the future of food and farming.

Eco-minded local people turned out in brilliant support not only for the film but also for the cathedral’s own Eco Group, who hosted the event as part of their commitment to encouraging environmental awareness and community engagement and the cathedral’s Green Policy.

As a fervent supporter of the Wakefield Cathedral Eco Group since its formation in 2022, Dean Simon opened the evening with a welcome and a prayer to set the tone for the evening.

Following the screening, guests were treated to a thought-provoking Q&A session with two brilliant local voices in sustainable practice: Robert Copley, a farmer based in the Wakefield District, and Katy Merrington, gardener at The Hepworth Wakefield Garden. Robert shared first-hand insights from life on the land, while Katy brought a perspective rooted in urban green spaces. Both spoke passionately about how we can all play a part in restoring our connection with nature.

Thank you to everyone who came along, shared thoughts, and supported the efforts for sustainable practices.

Since being awarded the A Rocha UK Bronze Eco Church Award in 2023, the Eco Group has set its sights on achieving the Silver Award. If you’re passionate about caring for the planet and want to help Wakefield Cathedral work towards this award, the Eco Group would love to welcome you. It is open to anyone who’s interested, whether you’ve got experience to share or are just starting your journey into eco-living. Come along and be part of the conversation, get in touch.
