You are invited to join two million people across the UK and others in Wakefield who will be coming ‘together for good’ this Great Big Green Week. Communities everywhere will be taking action to protect nature, tackle climate change and strengthen their environment and the places they love. The people involved come from all walks of life and backgrounds. Their commonality is that they want to do something positive and make things happen.
We at Wakefield Cathedral will be continuing to love our green spaces. Sadly we don’t have a churchyard as such so can’t take part in ‘Love your Burial Ground’ week which is also being held this next week but we are trying to encourage wildlife through planting the circles and the side garden which runs down the side of Treacy Hall. We have created a gardening group which is always happy to have new members who might have a few hours to spare. The bonus of helping out is that there is of course the opportunity to sample the cakes and light lunches at the Tea Tree Café in Treacy Hall. This is open from 10:00 – 15:00 Tuesday – Saturday. The gardeners are always looking for new ideas to help encourage pollinators. If gardening is not your thing maybe you could help us build some structures for a bee hotel to go in our developing moss garden.
If you’re coming to visit the cathedral or the café you could always assist us by bringing a bottle of water with you to help water the planters near the West doors. They get very dry at this time of year as they are sheltered from any rain by the tower.
Other churches around the country will be creating events and activities under the ‘Churches Count on Nature’ banner. This includes groups such as ‘Eco Educators’ and ‘The Climate Coalition’, click here for more information.
Our statement event as part of the Big Green Week is a public showing of the film ‘The People’s Emergency Briefing’ with a panel led discussion chaired by Bishop Malcolm on Friday evening. Whilst the event is now sold out if you were to add your name to the waiting list we might be able to gather enough interest to have a repeat showing. To find out more, please click here.
We are joining with ‘Just Transition Wakefield’ a non-political group who work to support and encourage those who have an interest in and love of the environment. We hope to see you there.
