Lent begins this week, a season of spiritual focus in preparation for Easter.

The Chapter – or Board of Trustees – of Wakefield Cathedral held their latest meeting on Wednesday February 26. Key agenda items included a ‘deep dive’ into mission and outreach, discussions of how we manage risk, as well as the usual in-depth discussions on finance and safeguarding, and review of regular reports from various committees and the senior management team.

Many years ago, while at a conference in Salisbury, I was lucky enough to take a trip to Bemerton, a small village just outside the city. We sang in the small church and were shown round the Rectory where the early sixteenth century Welsh poet and priest, George Herbert, had served and lived for three years until his death in 1633 at the age of forty.

Some of you might have seen the advance notice of an event that we are hosting in the cathedral on 09 April. The Eco Group, with the support of Just transition Wakefield, are showing the film Six inches of Soil, a film which, as the name suggests, is about the importance of good quality soil in our lives.

Yesterday Simon Cowling, Dean of Wakefield in the Diocese of Leeds, Church of England, announced he will retire on 31 July.
Dean Simon took up his post in September 2018, having previously served in parish and cathedral ministry in Leeds, Sheffield and North Yorkshire.

Earlier this week I found myself attending a meeting of cathedral precentors at Westminster Abbey. Not in the Abbey itself, however, but in a rather impressive room known as the Jerusalem Chamber.

When I mentioned the RSPB centre at St Aiden’s and Fairburn Ings the other week I had forgotten that we in Wakefield can bird-watch at Pugney’s Country Park.

A couple of weeks ago late one evening our next-door neighbour’s dog started barking. It barked and barked until I was about to get out of bed and then it stopped.
