It’s that time of year again when we can sign up to support the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch. ‘This is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey. Every year, hundreds of thousands of nature lovers take part, helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring.’ (RSPB.org.uk)

Just after New Year, a couple of days before the temperatures in Wakefield dropped to sub-zero, the cathedral heating system failed. The heating engineer duly attended, inspected the boilers and pipework, lifted grates here and there, spoke mysteriously about manifolds and pumps and valves – and then left saying he would write a report.

This comment is a rather late start to the New Year, which is already 10 days old by the time you read it. I hope that you all enjoyed the festivities and managed a break from everyday working. I’m also wondering just how many of you made resolutions but have already fallen by the wayside on those promises that you valiantly made on the 1st January? I suppose it depends on the resolution.

By the time you read this the mince pies will doubtless long be gone, the turkey a thankfully distant memory, and most (if not all) of the decorations taken down and packed away for another year.

Well, we made it, almost. There are only a few more days to go before the big day. There are still some carol services to go and Christingle but I’ve done my last concerts of 2024 and the bass is now in its corner for the holiday.

Those are the opening lines, as usually translated, of a German Christmas hymn, ‘Es ist ein Ros entsprungen’. As it happens the translation is not especially accurate, but it does capture a really important theme of Christmas which is sometimes overlooked.

The Chapter – or Board of Trustees – of Wakefield Cathedral met on Wednesday December 04. A busy agenda focused on a ‘deep dive’ into the cathedral’s arrangements for safeguarding, and approval of the budget for 2025, as well as the regular reports received by Chapter.
