As the Precentor wrote last week, a shadow has been cast over the Church of England by our very public safeguarding failures and the Archbishop of Canterbury’s decision to resign. There is much work to do, especially at the national level, to ensure our processes for reporting and dealing with allegations are more effective and safer.

Well, COP 29 might be said to have gotten off to a controversial start. The Azerbaijani president, Ilham Aliyev has told the United Nations (UN) climate conference that oil and gas are a “gift of God” and that nations “should not be blamed” for having fossil fuel reserves. (BBC News reporting form COP 29 in Baku.)

The necessity of light has been very much on my mind in the last week or so. Weather reports have noted the lack of daylight this month – the result, apparently, of high pressure causing moisture to become trapped as low cloud that blocks the sun, creating ‘anticyclonic gloom’, as the BBC news website poetically put it.

This week the church celebrates the wonderful feast of All Saints, to whom our cathedral is dedicated. On this feast, churches up and down the country enjoy singing a number of rousing hymns whose lyrics and tunes are both majestic and glorious.

Saturday is the feast of All Saints and our patronal festival. In many countries it is a fixed holiday and for many years was considered a ‘day of obligation’ so the faithful were expected to attend mass and ‘engage in rest from work and recreation’.
