Last week saw the final choral services of the choir year, as we waved the choristers and lay clerks off on their well-deserved summer break. Many of us, I’m sure, will be similarly disappearing over the coming weeks as we jet off on holiday or journey to our favourite UK destination (as long as the airports, trains, buses and motorways are still functioning)….

Nine-year old Lily-Rose is one of the newest members of Wakefield Cathedral’s ever-growing choir, having joined just four months ago, a role which is somewhat in contrast to her second musical hobby – learning how to mix the decks at the family pub just a stone’s throw away…

If you listen to Desert Island Discs on Radio 4, you will know that at the end of the programme every guest is invited to nominate a luxury that they would take if they were cast away on a desert island. My luxury (probably not allowable!) would be two cricket teams (with two umpires) playing an endless succession of five day test matches on a decent pitch.

On Thursday 23 June, Wakefield Cathedral will warmly welcome Revd Colin Baldwin, who is taking part in Stage Two of his mammoth challenge of cycling the English Cathedrals, raising funds to build a new centre by his church in the city of Southend-on-Sea.
