Volunteering

Our wonderful volunteers are at the heart of what we do at Wakefield Cathedral, supporting the cathedral across all areas of mission, work and worship, bringing with them their wealth of experience, personalities and skills – we simply couldn’t do what we do without them.

Why volunteer?

We’ve mentioned the enormous benefits which volunteers bring to Wakefield Cathedral, but likewise volunteering offers individuals some fantastic opportunities and benefits too! These include:

  • Making new friends

As a cathedral volunteer you will likely be working alongside a number of different people, from staff and congregation members to fellow volunteers, making new friends along the way!

  • Making a difference in your local community

Wakefield Cathedral is proud to support the local community and the Diocese of Leeds.

  • Making use of your skills

Whether you have customer service skills, computer skills or interpersonal skills, we can find the right role to match your talents.

  • Developing new skills

As well as maximising the use of your current skill set, volunteering can help you to upskill, perfect for those looking to learn new things or seeking a new career path.

  • Spiritual fulfilment

Many of our volunteers enjoy volunteering in, around and for the cathedral as it brings them closer to God, helping with the mission of the cathedral.

  • It's fun!

We want all of our volunteers to enjoy their role, have fun and make memories.

Wakefield Cathedral

“Volunteering at the Cathedral is fantastic! It’s so enjoyable. It’s a wonderful personal experience as well as giving to others – you give and receive at the same time. I wish I could do it more often.”

- Janice Tattersall, volunteer at Wakefield Cathedral.

What could you do?

We have plenty of possibilities just waiting for you to explore, whether you are looking for an events-based role, wanting to welcome people to the cathedral or keen to support the services on a Sunday, we can find the right opportunity for you.

We can work around your availability and flexibility, meaning if you are just looking for weekend work, only able to work Tuesdays or perhaps you are wanting to offer support from home we will be happy to work together to find the right volunteering job for your circumstances.

Chapter Members

Wakefield Cathedral is seeking to recruit two new members to the Cathedral Chapter.

The cathedral is a registered charity, and as such the Chapter functions as our Board of Trustees, overseeing the cathedral’s good governance, especially its finances and administration. Non-executive members of Chapter play a vital role contributing to the healthy and dynamic functioning of cathedral life, providing invaluable input, constructive challenge and support to the Dean and Management Team, including on the safeguarding, health and safety, and wellbeing of staff, volunteers, visitors and worshippers.

We are particularly seeking candidates with skills and experience in finance, marketing and fundraising, though experience of strategic planning, mission and outreach and environmental issues would also be welcome.
