I’ve been at the cathedral for nearly six weeks, and of course much of that time has been taken up by our response to The Queen’s death and funeral. Talk about in at the deep end! But it has meant I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the ‘shop floor.’

In literature one my favourite characters is Frank Bascombe. One of Franks insights about Christianity, is that it isn’t very helpful when it comes to grief, All the talk of new life can suppress the experience of loss; a kind of ‘don’t worry it ends up alright in end’.

It has seemed at some points over the past week as though the whole nation has taken in a deep collective breath. As well as giving thanks for the life of a deeply loved monarch, we are absorbing the consequences of her death for our national self-understanding.

So, schools are back! Parents are delighted but the students are a bit unsure… Schools are a very important part of our nation’s life, but I confess that I have an ambivalent relationship with education.

There’s only one silver lorry owned by a particular major national removals company. We know this because those who moved us from Reading to Horbury Junction were very proud of it! So it was quite funny to see in the newspaper a picture of the same lorry outside 10 Downing Street!

A member of the congregation recently told me that they are heading to Belfast (where I am from), for a few days break this month. As there is less risk of political violence these days, Northern Ireland is increasingly seen as somewhere to spend a few days.
